mjae

mjae is contemporary pop music with feeling and the latest outfit of Chicago singer and music-maker Matt Garvin. The mjae sound is built on house, funk and disco-inspired rhythms and vocal phrasings that function simultaneously as both a foreground and background element in the mix. While recorded media is of course important, the north star of mjae’s rhythm project is the live performance, with particular attention paid to Robert Moog’s observation that with live performance “you form a community, right there on the spot”.

Jake Victor

Chicago-based pianist and composer Jake Victor has been crafting his musical voice since the age of 4, plunking songs out by ear on an electric Yamaha keyboard. Victor’s interests and influences range far and wide, from Bach, Steve Reich, and South Indian Konnakol music to Ambrose Akinmusire, The Bad Plus, Robert Glasper, and Kendrick Lamar. He creates music incorporating kaleidoscopic influences into something immediately recognizable and accessible, but with deep substance. In 2018 Victor won a Downbeat Magazine Student Music Award “Best Undergraduate College Small Jazz Combo” for his debut album “Twisted Heads”, written and recorded in Amsterdam with the Jake Victor 5tet. Now living in Chicago, he is continuing this momentum with the Chicago-based Jake Victor Quartet, while maintaining a busy schedule of hip-hop/R+B keyboard gigs and studio work.
